Windows 98 Inside My Computer
Cutting the distances

Cut the distance to your files/folders

We've talked about the Start and Programs menu and we've mentioned something
about Shortcuts. Well, all the items in Programs menu are called Shortcuts.
ShortcutShortcuts are icons that give you fast access to "distant files/folders".
They are easily recognized by Shortcut mark at the bottom-left of the icon.
You can easily create your own shortcuts. Suppose you've create a file at
c:\temp\Myfolder\another\anotherfolder\file1.txt
The shortcut can be stored on the Desktop, it will send you to the distant location above with a single click, so you don't have to go through all the folders.

Right-click on the desktop, select New>>Shortcut, click Browse to specify the
location, click next, name the shortcut with something informative and click FINISH
One cool thing is that if you tried to create a shortcut for something on your computer
like a Windows program, it will automatically name the shortcut and receive the icon
of the program.

Now you are ready to create files, folders, shortcuts, open and close files.
The only Program you've met until now is NotePad. In Windows Application will be
talking about other applications that come shipped with Windows, you will learn how
to benefit from each.

Installing a new software on your computer seems now very easy, use Add/Remove
from Control Panel. The installation procedure is common to all programs: all you need
to do is press
Next, then Finish to complete installation.
Soon you will become an expert user and run a custom installation to have more
control over what's installed on your machine.
